You are still mourning. It manifests in your loving words and sweet recall. Why stop? She’s part of you.

Thank you, Michael, and thank you, Oldster. This account of a love story born of books and booze and brassy, bold women gives me a visceral sense of the streets and bars of New York in the '80s and '90s. May Lesley's memory be a blessing!

I loved reading this so much. It's so moving to read a man's words about his love, especially a fellow GenXer about a time so heady in my own life. I lived in NYC that summer between grad school terms and my dear pal Pinky lived in an apartment above Nightbirds! Thank you for sharing. Long Live Lesley Lenore Pitts!

Oh Michael, I'm sitting here in the Midwest after reading your moving story about Lesley. I'm both moved to tears, yet smiling for a life well lived. I actually had a friend, Kim, who reminds me of Lesley. She also died way too young. She was a writer, bon vivant and just so damn intelligent, and black too. I miss drinking 'rita's with her.

As others have commented--so incredibly tender--and the Nick and Nora comparisons--made me smile. Just lovely. 💜
