What makes a long relationship work? The authors of "The Way of Wonder" on writing together, co-running their jewelry company "Waxing Poetic," and facing down life's challenges as a committed duo.
Marital longevity - always fascinating to hear about. I've been with my husband for almost 50 years, married for 47 of them. We've grown up and grown old with each other. I'm always interested in why it's worked for some couples, and how it's worked. Is it just some sort of esoteric compatibility? Is it the environment they've built together? Is it connected individualism? So many strands...
It's clear that this beautiful couple are a wonderful match. Despite differences, they have the same core values, and balance each other. I like that they acknowledge that there is beauty even during life's hardships. Thank you for the thoughtful discussion!
I was sad when this conversation came to a close. John and Patti remind me of a calmer version of me and my husband who have been together going on 36 years (feisty east coast creative meets CA surfer). Multiple moves, raising kids, many dogs, cats, parrots and chickens and so many war stories. Once when we were having a (figurative) knock-down drag-out that resulted in a multi-day silent treatment coinciding with me leaving for a week to get one of our children settled in a new rental in another state, I realized how much I missed him as a friend. He admitted the same when I returned. It was pleasant to get a glimpse into John and Patti's vibe and where they've taken it in their lives. I found the interview inspirational. Thank you!
Interesting. What troubles me is all the chat about the wonders of living in awe at the natural world etc and the mention of a Christmas “box” to buy relating to living that way. Unless we decouple choosing to make meaningful choices about how to live on our planet with excruciatingly finite resources from monetizing those choices we are not being responsible stewards of our awe inspiring planet. We cannot do it alone . We must do it together.
I have been married 42 years. There is no “secret” to longevity and happiness , individually or as a couple or collectively as a society. It is a sustained concentrated
And deliberate focus of attention on doing the right thing and it is not easy.
That said may this beautiful couple creating beauty for us to share continue to thrive.
I'm looking forward to watching this. Married for almost 22, together for 25, two kids, three total dogs (one passed years ago), we bought five houses, we've lived in three states, and we just keep growing up together. After all, we got married when we were kids (22).
Thanks Sari. I enjoyed this interview very much. Thank you Patti and John for sharing so openly.
Reading the intro., I was struck by the Beauty Hunter reference. It immediately made me think of a beautiful soul, Cissy White, who sadly, died of ovarian cancer recently in her early 50's. She was a writer and a mother and shared her cancer journey with her readers. She boldly stated that she was a Joy Stalker! She was a trauma survivor and her blog was entitled HealWriteNow. She was a beautiful, powerful and influential person.
Loved our time together Sari—the insights, laughs and connection—like being with an old (not old!) friend. You have this marvelous gift of uncovering the power and depth in the common threads of our humanity as we move through life. All of us Oldsters benefit from what you do, so thank you, thank you! And thanks to everyone in this community—we’re thrilled to be here together with you!

Love this. Yes, I'm fascinated by this, too...

Life is going to send you as many curveballs and the point is to knock as many of them out of the park as possible.
