Lovely article. Good reminder to be more welcoming and inclusive to anyone sitting alone, for any reason, but yes, now I will make more of an effort to include those just a little older than me:)
A terrific essay by a seasoned, thoughtful writer! In a youth crazed society, aging is a taboo topic. Schulman bravely swims into waters few people dare to discuss or explore in writing.
I loved this. Thank you for your story. I’m 64 (so strange to write this number!) which is the age my Mom was when she died. That gives me so much perspective! I’m active, strong, healthy and working as a social worker. AND…I’m going to the knee doctor this week for some pain. Haha! Keep playing and swimming! Warmly, Didi didirowland.com
So much rang true for me in this essay. I am also 69, healthy and strong but allow myself to feel vulnerable anyway. I love the "tween" category. My kids, thankfully, think I am young as ever. It pushes me to keep up. Thanks for sharing this.
Love the idea of being a 'tween. I'm one, too. And seriously, I think you made the right choice in going with the more challenging, younger group of tennis players. It's always this way -- if we want to improve our game, we need to be challenged. Right to the end!
I couldn't relate to "senior" so I created and trademarked "Modernager" for people aging in a modern way in a modern world. I love your writing, Candy. Thank you.
Great read. Congrats on your brave spirit--tennis is so fun! And I can relate. I feel like a tweenager too.

I loved this so much!
Great essay! And it gives me hope that someday maybe I'll find that over-50 women's pickup ice hockey game.
Fantastic! LOVED this essay!

I loved this piece, Candy, one of your best.
I totally related even though I don’t play tennis. Reading this made me want to do more than walking and yoga and floating in the ocean.
