We have food trucks in Highland Park every Thursday night. We go to enjoy the food, listen to the music, and sometimes bring our grandchildren. We go to show that the shooter didn't win at the 4th of July parade last year. (We were there and we were spared.) We go to be a part of the community.
This is my I can’t get enough blackberries summer. Waiting for sweet corn and tomatoes—Kentucky is hot-hot-hot. The Addams Family musical tomorrow night. So many books to read, overhead fans working overtime. Lavender lemonade. Kayaking, practicing gratitude and patience.
Welcome to MN! I'm in Plymouth. I'm sure everyone has already told you about the State Fair, but the list of new foods has just been released, I usually make a list of new things, my husband prefers his old faves (Pronto pup, corn roast, gyros from one particular place).
Awwww! Kayaking is the best! I have finally been able to put my yak’ back in the water after 2.5 years of COVID / post COVID craziness on my immune system.
Which lake? I’m from St. Paul & lived near Lake Phalen, and then spent 15 years between Lake Nokomis & Lake Calhoun...I miss the walks, but not the bugs!!
For my maiden voyage, I went to Horsetooth Reservoir, and it was worth the wait!! The lakes here in Colorado may be hard to find, but the views are worth it!
Enjoy the views and if you can make it, take your yak up to the Boundary Waters, and get lost!! 😉 🛶
Fresno summers are long and very hot, but filled with delights at the many farmers markets, like fresh picked strawberries, blackberries, peaches, tomatoes, melons, on and on. A highlight is the first harvest of Fresno State corn. You can stand in long lines for it, or like us, just show up at The Annex Kitchen, a local Italian restaurant, for their featured dish of handmade Agnolotti, made with Fresno State corn, butter and chives. Add a tall, icy drink of your choice, and oh my, summer is grand!
For your sake, Robyn, I wish they did, too! But they need to first get a big shipload of Fresno State corn on the cob, and then prep it. Our server at Annex said it takes several days and days. Maybe you can have the dish shipped to you in dry ice. Ha! Seriously, I would consider it. Happy Summer!
I live in the high desert of northern New Mexico where summers are typically hot, sunny and dry, but beautiful. I love to hike in the surrounding woodlands to breathe in the distinctive smoky, sun-warmed scent of piñon trees -- pure aromatherapy. Summer also means frequent trips to the nearby LaPlata and San Juan mountains for solitude, nights filled with a billion stars and relief from the heat. And gardening. Hours spent coaxing and encouraging herbs, tomatoes, potatoes, green chile and heavenly blue morning glories to blossom and thrive.
I’ve always loved summer as to me it represents a time to play. I know, I am retired, and I can play all the time. But in summer it just seems easier to play. No lists. No striving. Few obligations. And best of all, I am warm.
I live on Bainbridge Island (a ferry ride from downtown Seattle) and summer is PERFECT here. Rarely gets much above 80 degrees (with exceptions lately due to climate change, not to mention the now annual “fire season” where we get choked by wildfire smoke). I am an open water swimmer, my friends and I really got into it in 2020 when the pool closed for months, and now we swim year round. Summer means water temps in the 60s, no wetsuit!
Same same about the calendar days in July and August! It's mid-July which means it's ALMOST OVER!!😭 I'm currently sitting on a boat on the ocean (at the dock), reading, writing and re-tooling my Substack. But, I'm also procrastinating. Ocean dip coming up after I get some work done. Savouring every moment as the days slip by (too fast).
Lots of chocolate soft serve and TOMATOES! Swimming every chance I get. Heading to the Rockaways this weekend because I also get that itchy feeling in mid-July, especially if I haven't been in the ocean yet.
That picture of NYC kids, brought me back to my youth-trying to keep warm in that sweltering city in the summer! The water hydrants and the game of sewer stickball were our salvations. How will global warming effect childhood city games of the future???
Wading in the mountain streams of North Carolina - enjoying the solitude - casting flies I hand-tied in hopes that an entomologically challenged Brook Trout will grant me an audience.
Normally, summer is 'all sandals, all the time' but my lower back and left leg are not cooperating (a discectomy is in my near future) and I MISS IT. My feet long to be freeeee.
Instead, it's 'all fruit, all the time': grapes, cherries, strawberries. Next is stone fruit and watermelon.
Here in the desert, we are about to break a record for the number of days we've been above 110 (2 weeks and counting), so our summer is indoors, air conditioning, burning our hands on steering wheels and putting out extra water for plants & birds. I loved summer as a kid, even here - I could handle the heat better then I suppose. But our "one wild and precious season" is the gorgeous AZ winter, so we'll spend the rest of the summer reminding each other that winter is, someday, coming.
Honestly summer is over already for me. The heatwave and humidity from climate change have ruined summer for me. I still go to the shore every weekend when I can, but living in the city is hotter than living in upstate NY. Maybe I should look into that but now that area is getting flooding. There’s nowhere to escape climate change. June was beautiful. That was my one month of summer as I remember it before the heat index changed everything for me. The heat tires me out so I don’t have the energy to weigh in on more.
We're in the dark damp depths of winter here in the southern hemisphere... but I'm enjoying lots of slices of vicarious summertime in other people's newsletters! And I love those pics of early 70's Sari 😊

I love it. And thank goodness you were spared. 🙏🏼

Sounds divine.
The Addams Family musical was so much fun! Community theatre is the best.
My summer prescription is get into the water every day. Pool or ocean, ideally both. And eat peaches until my stomach aches.
Love it! 🍑
i recently moved to St. Paul. MN.. the Twin Cities, with many lakes. Last weekend I got in a kayak for the first time ever. LOVED IT!

You're making me hungry!
I live in Piemonte, home of agnolotti -- and I only wish there was a restaurant here doing it like The Annex Kitchen. It sounds amaaaazing!
Yum.

Ah yes. We have lots of goodness here but I miss good American sweet corn in the summer. Perhaps a stop in Fresno on our next summer Stateside.
I hope you do! If so, look me up on social media. I’ll share a plate with you! Cheers!

Nice. Did you see this pice on open water swimming by Josiane Chriqui? https://oldster.substack.com/p/blubber-boys
Oh thanks for that! ❤️

Seems like you've got it all figured out!
Well, today at least :)

Oh, right, TOMATOES.

Yeah, climate change has caught up with us, and is definitely affecting the weather. We have really screwed ourselves...
