In an excerpt of "I Thought You Loved Me," Mari Naomi's graphic Gen X memoir due out in May, they write about an ex-friend from their teens and 20s whose memory still haunts them in their late 40s.
As usual, I fall behind in looking at email, but I am glad I saved this piece of art for the weekend so I could look at it slowly and enjoy the artist's skill and creativity.
Love it. Lots of resonance, but from different personal contexts. What I love about this format of creative expression is its atmospheric and layered metaphoric quality.
The human experience IS a dreamscape, IMO. Our particular culture forces plot and linearity and archetype, as a way to master narrative for categorization and marketability.
I champion this and any form of expression that defies artifice.
I love your work. I am working on a hybrid book about grief/loss and your images and words really touched me. Congratulations on getting your work out there. Amalia
“At what point does an attempt at catharsis become self-flagellation?”
From my own experience, a lot sooner than I thought it would.
Ugghhhhhh!!! Sooooooo relatable!
I love this book so much, and would be remiss if I didn't include Mari's playlist for it:

I can relate. I wish I couldn't. I bet most of us can.
I have never read or even imagined a book like this. It's beautiful, and I need to know & see what happens next. *clicks pre-order*

Bravo, Mari.
Very moving and beautiful. I had/have a friendship like this. I "wrote it out" in my novel "Better than Sisters."
This is just gorgeous.
Really looking forward to reading this when it comes out!
What a beautiful, haunting piece. Thanks for writing this @MariNaomi.

This just heightens the excitement as I await my pre-ordered copy of I Thought You Loved Me.
Sari…I wish you would change your email headers. I almost deleted and blocked this because there was no mention of Oldster!
