Here is my system with Talenti Rasberry Sorbet. Run the container under hot water and then whack it against the stainless steel table. It works. But it does nothing to change the direction of our country.

It may not change things immediately, but gelato may make you feel better and give you the strength to carry on!

I agree. The raspberry sorbet makes me feel even better when I combine it with the chocolate sorbet.

Once it’s open, if you’re not going to ‘serve’ it all, run a little cooking oil on the plastic threads. One battle is enough.

Laura, this is utterly gorgeous writing. You are the god of small things opening the way to big, big things as only great writing can do. I, for one, feel like I've just had a lovely bowl of chocolate black raspberry. You go girl. Thank you.

God, this is so good, so real, so true! Makes me gladder than ever I'm an Oldster subscriber.

Me too.

I'm glad you went to the protest in DC, I went to one yesterday. It feels like it does nothing but as you said, it's time to make the donuts, to be visible and counted as objectors to what is happening.

I recently bought a pint of Talenti sorbetto and could not open it. I finally pried it open with a knife. I have a rotator cuff tear and just added that to the list of "things I can't do anymore." THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME KNOW IT'S NOT MY FAULT.

OK, I read the whole thing and I love it. If you can open that Talenti, we’ve got this. And thank you for going to protest. I’ve been calling Schumer and leaving rants every day on his voicemail.

Thank you! I needed that encouragement!

Amazed that you combined my (also) fav flavor of Talenti with such a strong political piece. Thank you!! As a slightly older boomer I love to see political protest back in the mix, but am sad that it’s come to this.

I had no idea my Talenti problem wasn't unique! I gave up and threw mine out! But your essay, I loved it! And feel more inspired. I haven't had the courage to read/watch the news...can't look at "their" faces...hear their voices, although I did watch a couple of hearings. As a "boomer" from the '60's, we must push on and make noise. And, in the meantime, continue to console ourselves with Talenti, however we get the lid off!

Your house is on fire, and the fire department says it'll be an hour before they can get there. You know without help your house will burn to the ground. But you're standing there with your neighbors, and there's a garden hose and some buckets. What do you do?

Thank you for the journey. I admire you for taking the train to DC and standing up for all of us. You maybe just maybe have inspired me to do the same even though I hate crowds too. But if not now, when? Oh and in addition to the Talenti lids, those square plastic containers containing olives or whatever that you have to put your glasses on to see if you need to lift or pull or fucking pound it with a hammer…

Run it under hot water for ten seconds. It’s not that ice cream is sticking it closed when it’s brand new, but I think it’s something about how the plastic sets when they package it. Ten seconds; twists right off.

I have to up my Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip consumption just for the empty jars despite the challenges. They are the best storage containers.

More importantly, the found strength to open the jar is vital grit and resilience training.

Nevertheless, we persisted.

Thank you for marching. All together we make big noise and matter big time. (Try briefly running hot water on the lid.)

Sometimes those Talenti lids just stick. I don’t know if it’s glue from the protective paper under the cover or something, but I once sawed off the top with a bread knife when I gave up on opening it.

Brava! The heart wants what the heart wants. 🤤

For some reason I am picturing your heroism as a Marge Simpson episode. She doesn’t give up either. Whatever it takes!

Thank you so much for this.
