I began reading it, expecting a story of sisters (and it is that), but gradually it became so much more. . . genetics, unequal medical care, history, the risks of pregnancy, and life in utero. . . in the end, all brought back to sisterhood. I couldn't stop reading! Thank you for this wonderful story.
Your prose is so elegant. As I read your excerpt, it reminded me of a podcast episode I heard on Dani Shapiro's Family Secrets. When you mentioned your mother ran a numbers game (a business I heard of from the first time during that podcast), I wondered if you were the same person. And indeed you are!
