Beautiful writing, read straight thru with morning coffee. I can only speculate my mother's stress hormones, plus cigarettes, created something in me, the elder, and my sister, the younger by 3 years, such that after Dad left our ages 6 and 3, we never got along, ever. Allergic to each other's survival modes. In Utero research is the next leep!

It’s all connected, isn’t it? 🙏🏾

Thank you for a story that is both poignant and informative. I began reading it, expecting a story of sisters (and it is that), but gradually it became so much more. . . genetics, unequal medical care, history, the risks of pregnancy, and life in utero. . . in the end, all brought back to sisterhood. I couldn't stop reading! Thank you for this wonderful story.

Your prose is so elegant. As I read your excerpt, it reminded me of a podcast episode I heard on Dani Shapiro's Family Secrets. When you mentioned your mother ran a numbers game (a business I heard of from the first time during that podcast), I wondered if you were the same person. And indeed you are! I still think about the yellow shoes! What a fun a-ha moment. Congratulations on your most recent novel.

I had intended only glance at this essay and circle back later, but I was captured from the start. This story is beautiful, moving and I also learned so much. Thank you thank you for telling us about this time in your life.

This is the most powerful and insightful piece I have read in years. Have you read The Myth of Normal? He presents ton of research on intrauterine and maternal trauma.

🙏🏾🙏🏾 I haven’t read that book but now I can’t wait to — love the title!

Exquisite. Softly spoken with all the shark edges intact. I'm already inside your story and eager to read the rest.

I plan to share this essay with my medicine and humanities students--so much here that's important for our future healthcare workers to take in.

That means SO MUCH to me. Thank you!!

I read Ms. Davis' astounding book about her mom, and I can't wait to read this one too!

Oh Bridgett, so lovely to see this excerpt here! I so enjoyed The World According to Fannie Davis before VONA last year. I look forward to this book as I wrap up production on the novel, and get back to my memoir draft. Writing our personal truths and connecting them to the world's bigger, and at times uglier truths is hard work. Thank you for giving me more tools to dig deep last year. You were a big inspiration for me to share short personal pieces here. 💜🙏🏽

Bridgett, I devoured The World According to Fannie Davis and Love, Rita. Such wonderful, original stories. Just beautiful! I'm interested in using a short quote from Love Rita in my own memoir. Who should I contact to request permission?

Bridgett M. Davis's avatar

I’m flattered! For a short quote just provide attribution in your text.

Of course. I was thrilled to see your work pop up on the Oldster substack. The quote from Love Rita is one line and attributed to your work. Thank you so much!!
