My compulsions never having catapulted my life over the boundary of social acceptability or likely survival it's tempting to say I don't have an addiction problem. But I have loved too many people who do have addiction problems to make that claim entirely truthfully. Being repeatedly addiction adjacent is its own compulsion, but this series allows me to do that with less harm to myself and more hope for those I love, even if I now have to love them at a distance.

I love this collaboration, the idea that growing older and experiencing sobriety both involve a kind of counting time on this earth, every day a deeper step into understanding where you've been. Both bring, if we're lucky, a kind of wisdom, even if we don't recognize it as such, yet. Appreciate these perspectives so much.

At the end of the day every sober journey is different but we must seek our common purpose which is to help this still suffering. If that means violating the 11th tradition occasionally then so be it. The crisis needs our army.

I celebrated my fourth sober anniversary on Thanksgiving. I was a one and done drinker, but the studies on the dangers of alcohol for women were enough to convince me to simply stop. I don’t miss the buzz or the hangovers. The growing market for ZA drinks means that there are alternatives. We had ZA champagne this Thanksgiving, and it was just fine. These stories give courage to people who would like to stop.

Congrats on 4 years! I've been enjoying various flavors of Spindrift, tonic with lime on the rocks, and I loooove the "phony negroni" from St. Agrestis, although I cut it with seltzer because it is very sweet.

Sari, I am so glad you have this series as a happily sober oldster of nearly three years now. My sixties got off to a great start when I stopped drinking. I now have so much more clarity, connection, community and creativity (the 4Cs that guide my life and inspire my own Substack), so keep the interviews coming in 2024. I always find something that echoes my own experience in these Q&As.
