The best line ever: "I look at that Cialis ad on TV of a silver-haired couple sitting in soaking tubs, placidly gazing at a sunset and think, Who are these people, and why are they so dull?" Bless you, Hal Rubenstein, and amen!

I love your exuberance! About the learning to play piano regret, why not start now? I started learning violin at 68, three years ago. Got a teacher. Practiced some each day. I can actually play with some intention now.
Good advice Hal and clearly you are taking your own.
As you imply, “aging well” is also letting go of all performative excesses.
I just cancelled a plenary address at a research conference in Singapore in July where AI is far more sexy than anything I could say about Cialis and/or Ai.
Instead, having just turned 88, I “red-eyed” home last night to NYC from a birthday dinner given by me for me in LA attended only by loving, generous and funny family and friends—old and new.
One, my smart and witty daughter known since the moment of birth. Another, guest, met only once who brought with her an economics professor who also does stand-up.

Your insights on aging are both refreshing and inspiring. I appreciate how you challenge the stereotypes associated with getting older, emphasizing that age should not dictate our energy, curiosity, or contributions. Your perspective on the importance of small moments over grand milestones resonates deeply; it’s a reminder to cherish the everyday experiences that truly enrich our lives.
I also agree that the narrative around aging needs to shift. Instead of viewing older individuals as less valuable, we should recognize their wealth of knowledge and experience as vital assets in our organizations and communities. The idea of "New Aging" is a powerful concept that encourages us to embrace the vitality and wisdom that come with age.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. They serve as a valuable reminder that growing older can be a time of growth, learning, and continued contribution. Let's continue to advocate for a culture that celebrates and leverages the strengths of all ages!

I loved each of these answers so very much, especially Hal's description of his 40s and 50s as being full of "high energy, fearlessness, and hunger for the unknown." This inspires me so much!

Enjoyed this post! Especially this: "My mom always said that you should leave the house expecting to run into someone you went to high school with." That's hilarious. And here's to already full buckets, a mindset that tends to lead to more fulfillment, ironically.
